Post-Pregnancy Body Contouring surgery (aka post-pregnancy plastic surgery) in Sydney refers to surgical procedures performed after you’ve had your baby. They often combine an Abdominoplasty with some type of breast surgery, such as a Breast Lift (Mastopexy), Breast Augmentation or Breast Reduction. However, depending on the individual’s needs, post-pregnancy surgery may include additional procedures to address changes in the arms, thighs or genitals.
Your eligibility, or suitability for surgery, will depend on various factors such as timing and clinical appropriateness. This article explains.
Timing is critical when considering post-pregnancy surgery. Pregnancy has triggered profound hormonal, vascular and structural changes, which take time to recover from. Undergoing surgery too soon significantly increases the risk of severe medical complications, including blood clots, infection and poor wound healing, while also compromising surgical results.
Additionally, it’s essential to remember that recovering from surgery heavily compromises your ability to care for a newborn.
For these reasons, Dr Dona recommends waiting at least six months after giving birth and several months after weaning from breastfeeding before undergoing cosmetic or reconstructive surgeries.
There is no definitive list of post-pregnancy surgical procedures that are performed individually or in combination. However, the following procedures are often requested.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
An Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that reconstructs the abdominal wall and is commonly requested after pregnancy. It removes excess skin and fatty tissue and, where required, tightens the abdominal wall and/or repairs any hernias. There are various Abdominoplasty procedures, depending on the individual’s needs.

A Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts using breast implants. It is performed for a variety of reasons, but is commonly requested as a post-pregnancy cosmetic surgery procedure.

A Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is a surgical procedure that addresses breast ptosis (droop). It is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. During surgery, Dr Dona lifts the nipple and tightens the hanging breast tissue beneath it. The procedure often increases breast volume, especially in the upper breast.

A Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes excess breast tissue and skin while lifting and reshaping the breasts. The procedure is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. It is often performed to help patients eliminate back, neck and shoulder pain caused by large breasts.

Some women following childbirth (or other reasons) have enlarged labia minor, which can cause pain, discomfort, hygiene issues, clothing issues and intimacy concerns. A Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the labia minora.

Additional Factors That Determine Suitability
With all of the above surgical procedures, potential patients should also:
If your post-pregnancy surgery is considered cosmetic and not reconstructive, it will not attract a Medicare item number. This means you will also not be able to claim from your Private Health Insurance, as insurance funds will only rebate a surgical procedure with a Medicare item number.
However, some post-pregnancy procedures do attract an item number.
Typically, this occurs when a woman seeks an Abdominoplasty and has diastasis recti (abdominal wall separation). In this case, they may qualify for item 30175, provided they meet the following requirements:
If you have a Breast Reduction, it may also be eligible for a Medicare item number and therefore qualify for partial coverage.
For example, Medicare item 45523 provides some coverage for a breast reduction in patients with macromastia (gigantomastia). This is a medical condition characterised by abnormally large, heavy breasts that cause physical and psychological distress. Typically, patients with macromastia experience neck or shoulder pain.
Medicare will also partially cover some individuals with breast cancer or an abnormal growth with item 45520.
Provided that you are assigned a Medicare item number, your Private Health Insurance fund may partially cover you for the hospital accommodation, theatre fees and a portion of your surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees. However, you typically must have the top-level cover for this to be possible.
It’s important to stress that timing is vital when planning post-pregnancy surgery, and that you mustn’t rush things. Remember that your body has gone through a massive undertaking with pregnancy and childbirth, and it takes time to recover. Wait at least six months after giving birth and three to six months after weaning before scheduling your surgery.
Keep in mind that, when procedures are combined, post-pregnancy body contouring surgery can take several hours on the operating room and is performed under general anaesthesia. You’ll need to be fit and well, and have prepared thoroughly for several weeks of structured recovery and time off work and household duties.
There is also the risk of bleeding and infection associated with any surgical procedure, and other issues such as delayed wound healing and anaesthesia related complications.
Surgery also leaves scars, and this must be considered. However, at Bella Plastic Surgery, all patients undergo a comprehensive post-operative care plan. This includes LED Light therapy sessions and various industry-leading modalities that accelerate wound healing, reduce swelling and discomfort and minimise the appearance of scars.
As you recover from childbirth, you can still start to plan for your procedure by taking the following steps.
In addition to your health preparation, you’ll also need to prepare things at home.
