Revision Breast Surgery
As a specialist plastic surgeon with a busy breast surgery practice, Dr Eddy Dona is frequently called upon to assess and fix all manner of problems following breast surgery.
Whether the original surgery was a breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction, each of these procedures have there unique forms of potential complications that may warrant revision. This can involve a minor “adjustment” to a complete redo and “reconstruction”.
So if you have concerns about your breast surgery results, and would like Dr Eddy Dona to see what can be done, please contact our office for more information.
Breast enhancement surgery is the commonest of all cosmetic surgical procedures. So it’s no wonder that breast revision surgery is also a common procedure. This can be requested early after the initial surgery due to an unsatisfactory result, or several years later due to changes in appearance or patient desires that have occurred over time.
It’s every surgeon’s job to ensure a realistic potential result is outlined to each patient along with the potential complications. It is also every surgeon’s job to do their best to achieve that result. Every busy surgeon will have a small number of patients where the results are not ideal and thus they would benefit from some form of revision surgery. Of course, Dr Dona is not immune to patients that would benefit from revision surgery, and he will always do his absolute best to ensure that his patients are happy. This of course does assume that patients are compliant with their standard post-operative follow-up and have realistic expectations given there original breast size and shape. For difficult problems, seeking a second opinion is always a good idea and even Dr Dona will happily suggest to some patients to seek a second opinion.
Unfortunately for some surgeons (or clinics) the number of patients requiring revision is unacceptably high. This is especially true in those patients who have had surgery overseas. Dr Dona is regularly called upon to provide second opinions and fix the problems created by other surgeons. Whilst Dr Dona would always suggest undergoing surgery by the original surgeon, this is not frequently possible for many reasons, and often not wanted by the patient.
There are many reasons why a person would be unhappy and require revision breast surgery:
- Too big or too small
- Inadequate cleavage or sideboob
- Generally poor shape
- Implants settling in a poor position
- Implants bottoming out
- Double bubble
- Inadequate implant pocket
- Capsular contracture
- Changes in breast tissue
- Ruptured implant
When the initial surgery also included (or should have included) a breast lift procedure, the potential causes and problems are magnified.
Whatever the reason, there are numerous issues that your surgeon needs to take into account when planning any form of revision surgery. More often than not, the revision surgery is far more difficult than performing a typical breast augmentation. Even a simple request of “wanting bigger” implants is often not so straightforward especially when the original surgery was performed by another surgeon.
Ultimately, understanding your concerns and performing a careful assessment is the first step toward creating a surgical plan to create a new you to be happy with.
