What is a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

A Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a surgical procedure that addresses concerns in the abdominal area following weight loss, pregnancy or trauma. The most common concerns are stretch marks, excess skin, fatty tissue and weakened, separated muscles. Additionally, patients can experience problems such as significant abdominal wall muscle separation (affecting posture and causing lower back pain) and hernias involving the belly button.

Abdominoplasty surgery is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. Typically, the procedure takes between three and five hours.

Sometimes patients also have concerns regarding their pubic area, with the flesh in this area becoming full and potentially drooping. This issue can also cause hygiene issues and problems with wearing tight-fitting clothing.

Types of Tummy Tucks

There are several types of Tummy Tucks available, depending on the patient’s requirements. The names applied to these Tummy Tucks typically relate to the surgical scars created. These names include:

  • Mini Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
  • Standard Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
  • Fleur De Lis Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
  • Open Book Tummy Tuck™ (Abdominoplasty)
  • Reverse Tummy Tuck

Suitable candidates for Abdominoplasty must be at a stable and maintainable weight for 12 months before undergoing surgery. Additionally, they should be in good mental and physical health, understand all surgical risks and complications and have realistic expectations regarding their surgical outcomes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS

The required time off work after Abdominoplasty depends on the type of procedure you’ve had and the work you do. As a guideline, you should avoid driving for the first two weeks. After two weeks, you can consider returning to work-from-home office-based duties. After three weeks, returning to an office-based environment may be possible. Light hospitality work may be possible after four weeks. By six weeks, you should be able to resume normal, strenuous activities. However, you will still feel sore and not entirely back to normal. You can easily participate in various activities, though, provided you use common-sense caution.

Most people remain in hospital after Abdominoplasty surgery for at least two days. However, many choose to stay for up to one week.

Recovering from Abdominoplasty takes time. By six weeks, you’ll be able to return to normal activities gradually, but you won't feel 100 per cent yet. Most of your swelling, pains and tightness should have resolved by six months. By this time, you’ll likely think that you’ve returned to normal and forgotten you’ve had surgery—except for the fact that you now look quite different.

Yes, it is possible to have a baby after a Tummy Tuck as the procedure does not affect fertility. However, it may hinder the results of your surgery as a new pregnancy may cause skin laxity, muscle separation and potential hernias. Ideally, it’s best to wait until you’ve finished having children before electing to have Abdominoplasty surgery.

A Tummy Tuck can remove most, if not all, of the lower abdominal wall stretch marks.
