What are pigmented Birthmarks?

Pigmented birthmarks are coloured markings found on the skin at birth or shortly after birth. Birthmarks exhibit a range of colours including brown, tan, black, pale blue, red or purple and can be flat or raised.

What can I expect in the treatment?

Prior to treatment the area to be treated will be cleansed and a set of clinical photos will be taken. The pigmented birthmark will then be removed within a few minutes with our advanced laser device.

One of the key benefits of removing pigmented birthmarks by laser is that there is no cutting and associated scarring that occurs with a surgical removal of the birthmark.

While some minor scarring can occur post laser removal of a pigmented birthmark, this is usually seen as a pale white colour, no larger than the birthmark itself. Facial skin heals very well and, in most cases, once the treated area has healed, it will be difficult to detect the original location of the pigmented birthmark.

How long does the procedure take?

While the pigmented birthmark removal procedure takes only minutes, we do schedule at least 30 minutes for your appointment to allow time for you to complete a Patient Registration Form, receive a consultation and discuss the procedure and post-care instructions.

How many treatments will I require?

Our innovative laser technology facilitates the removal of a pigmented birthmark immediately at the time of treatment. In rare cases where there is pigment that lays deep under the skin, a subsequent treatment may be required.

Is the treatment painful?

Topical and/or local anaesthetic will be administered prior to your treatment to ensure you are comfortable and experience very little to no pain.

Post Treatment Results

Following your treatment, the birthmark will have been visibly removed, and the treated area will be red and slightly swollen. Within a few days post treatment, a scab will form on the treated area which will usually remain for a couple of weeks until the underlying skin has healed. Once the scab has fallen off, the treated area will appear due to the formation of new blood vessels which are required to heal the skin. Over time, the redness will dissipate and return to the surrounding skin colour.
