Factors That Affect Your Breast Reduction Surgery

Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation allows you to discuss your objectives and whether Breast Reduction surgery may be appropriate for you. After assessing you, Dr Dona will tailor a surgical plan and discuss it in detail. Following your consultation, you’ll receive a formalised quote outlining all costs involved.

Variations in Breast Reduction Surgery Techniques

There are several surgical techniques available for Breast Reduction Surgery, and the most appropriate approach will depend on each patient’s individual anatomy and concerns. During your initial consultation, Dr Dona will assess your breasts and recommend a surgical approach based on the issues that need to be addressed.

With few exceptions, Breast Reduction Surgery also involves a Breast Lift (Mastopexy). In addition to reducing breast size and lifting the breasts, surgery typically aims to address breast shape and symmetry. The extent of surgery required to address these factors varies between patients, with some procedures being more complex and time-consuming than others.

The complexity of the procedure and the time required to perform the surgery are therefore important factors in determining the overall cost of Breast Reduction Surgery.

Dr Dona’s Fee

Dr Dona’s fee covers the surgical component of your Breast Reduction procedure. The fee will vary depending on the nature and complexity of the surgery required, including the anticipated operating time.

Surgeons’ fees can also vary considerably depending on factors such as their qualifications, experience and expertise in performing the procedure.

Your surgical fee includes all routine post-operative follow-up appointments with Dr Dona.

Anaesthetist’s Fee

Your anaesthetist is the specialist doctor who puts you to sleep for the surgery, monitors you throughout and provides you with post-operative analgesia (pain medication). Anaesthetist pricing can vary depending on how long your surgery takes.

Hospital & Theatre Fee

Breast Reduction surgery is performed in a private hospital, so your total costs may include operating theatre and hospital fees. Some patients can return home on the day of surgery, while others may need to stay overnight or for longer. Your length of stay in hospital can therefore affect the overall cost.

Will My Breast Reduction Attract a Medicare Rebate?

If your Breast Reduction meets the relevant Medicare requirements and is performed for an eligible medical reason, a Medicare rebate may apply.

Dr Dona will advise you whether a Medicare rebate applies during your consultation.

If you qualify for a Medicare rebate, it may contribute toward Dr Dona’s fee, reducing your total out-of-pocket cost.

Does Private Health Insurance Provide a Rebate?

If a Medicare item number applies to your surgery, your Private Health Insurance may also contribute towards eligible hospital and medical costs. However, you must have appropriate hospital cover that includes the relevant procedure and have served any applicable waiting periods. Your insurer can confirm whether your policy provides cover and what out-of-pocket costs you may have.

What Is a Breast Reduction?

A Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size of your breasts. It removes excess tissue and skin while lifting and addressing the shape of the breasts. A Breast Reduction is usually performed for medical and functional reasons for women experiencing the following:

  • Postural problems
  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Pain in breast tissue
  • Deep bra strap grooves in shoulders
  • Skin irritation, chafing and infections
  • Problems and limitations exercising

Sometimes, women with large breasts also feel that their breasts are too large for their body frame, making it difficult to find clothing that fits. Their nipples often point downwards, and the areolas are large and stretched.

Breast Reduction Techniques

Several Breast Reduction techniques are available. Dr Dona will recommend the most appropriate one for you, depending on your breast size and shape, the amount of skin and tissue to be removed, skin quality and nipple position. More involved procedures will cost more.

Anchor Scar Technique

This technique involves an incision around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the breast fold. It is commonly used for moderate-to-large reductions and allows removal of significant amounts of skin and tissue.

Lollipop Scar Technique

This technique involves a scar around the areola and a vertical scar extending downwards, without the horizontal scar along the breast fold. It may suit mild to moderate reductions.

Circumareolar Scar Technique

Also known as the Benelli or doughnut technique, this involves a single scar around the areola. It is generally suitable for very small reductions or minor breast lifts, as it allows limited removal of breast tissue and skin.
