WHAT IS THIS PRODUCT?
This product is a non-human and non-animal formulation of Deoxycholic acid (DA). Deoxycholic acid occurs naturally in the body where it helps to break down dietary fat.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
When injected below the chin, DA breaks down and destroys the fat cells by a process known as adipocytolysis. When injected into the subcutaneous fat, it causes permanent destruction of fat cells. Once these fat cells are destroyed they cannot store or accumulate fat.
WHERE IS IT USED?
Deoxycholic Acid is injected below the chin into the subcutaneous fat.
IS IT SAFE?
This product has an extremely safe and proven track record with no reported long term side effects.
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE TREATMENT?
Prior to administering treatment, ice packs and/or topical anaesthetic is applied to ensure comfort. The treatment involves a series of injections into the area under the chin and usually takes between 15-20 minutes. After the treatment you may be advised to use ice/cold packs and/or oral analgesics to manage the side effects as needed.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Many patients will experience visible improvement of their chin profile in 2-4 treatments. Each treatment is performed at least 6 weeks apart. Once desired results have been achieved, the fat cells have been destroyed thus results are considered permanent.
RETURNING TO NORMAL ACTIVITIES?
Normal activities can be resumed immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise or massaging the area.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS?
As with other injectable treatments, you may experience side effects.
Most patients will experience mild or moderate discomfort at the time of injection and will experience at least mild swelling which means the product is working.
The most common other side effects include bruising, numbness, redness, tingling, formation of small areas of hardness and itching around the treatment area.
Although unlikely, other side effects may include trouble swallowing, nausea, skin tightness, discolouration, unusual hair loss, ulcers or nerve injury resulting in an uneven smile. If nerve injury occurs (less than 4% of patients) it is always temporary however may take several months to resolve.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The total cost for the first two treatments is $2,500. Subsequent treatments if required are $1,000 per treatment.
