Prominent, voluminous cheekbones create a youthful, healthy appearance, and are a feature of many attractive people.
Someone who is not genetically blessed with fuller cheeks can achieve this with non-surgical cheek enhancements. Those who do have fuller cheeks will tend to lose volume as they age which can be noticeable even in your late twenty’s. The cause of this loss of cheek prominence includes a diminishing bone density, thinning of the skin, loss and gravitation of cheek soft tissue. The end result is a deficient cheek structure that makes your face appear drawn and gaunt. It may also give the appearance of heaviness in the lower face and an aged look in the under-eye area.
Replacing the volume of the cheeks has the effect of “lifting” the face. Fortunately, a minimally-invasive, walk-in walk-out clinic treatment using long-lasting cosmetic tissue fillers can be performed to create cheek volume, fullness and definition.
WHAT TYPES OF TISSUE FILLERS ARE USED?
Over the years there have been numerous types of injectable fillers available. However, the most commonly used fillers are hyaluronic acid based. These are complex sugar molecules found naturally throughout the body and which bind with water to cushion and provide volume to the skin. Over time it is naturally metabolised and absorbed by the body.
HOW IS IT DONE?
A cheek enhancement with tissue fillers is a quick, walk-in, walk-out treatment that creates youthful volume and fullness to the cheek area. Fillers are injected to plump the cheek area creating natural height and definition for an instant cheek lift.
Prior to your treatment, the cheek area will be desensitized with a topical gel to help alleviate any discomfort. Most individuals are surprised to experience virtually no pain at all. Immediately following treatment, cheekbones appear more defined, the overlying skin looks tighter and the eyes look less tired.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
A cheek enhancement with dermal fillers is customized to meet the individual needs of each person and typically can last from 12 to 18 months.
ARE THERE ANY POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS?
Non-surgical cheek enhancements are much safer and less costly than traditional cheek implants. There is no significant recovery time with non-surgical cheek enhancement, with most patients returning to work immediately. There is some mild swelling and slight discomfort afterwards, with a very small risk of bruising at the area of injection. Typically, the soreness is gone within a few hours, swelling resolves within a day or so and bruising is gone in a matter of days.
SURGERY – AN ALTERNATE CHEEK ENHANCEMENT OPTION?
Traditionally, a malarplasty, or surgical cheek augmentation, was the only way to add volume to the cheek area. This involves inserting implants such as silicone or gortex through an incision made inside the mouth, into the cheek. This procedure can work well, but is somewhat invasive and carries several days of downtime and discomfort. Solid implants also run the risk of moving or getting infected, in which case they have to be removed and the resulting cosmetic defect is devastating.
Alternatively, fat can be harvested from another part of the body and placed in the cheek as an injected fat graft. This is also a technique that can yield great results. Unfortunately, the problem with fat injections is that they are still an unreliable enhancement method. The duration of effect of the fat graft depends on the patient, on the skill of the doctor and on the area injected. The other issue is that it is, like cheek implants, an invasive and expensive procedure.
